Taylor Swift, an American singer-songwriter is one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Taylor has given us songs to drink to, dance to, cry to and call ex-boyfriends up to. The influence Taylor holds over the youth and millennials alike is to be admired. She has been a huge name in the music industry for years and has had immense growth in terms of personality and music career. Her journey for years was a roller coaster in the public eye and open to criticism from media for the longest time until after her fifth album 1989’s release and tour, Taylor took a break from the media and disappeared while curating her album Reputation that released in 2017 and her music style has changed ever since, widening from just pop music. Here’s a list of Taylor’s albums and how her style in music has evolved over the years.
Taylor Swift – 2006
As a sixteen year old, Taylor entered the music industry as a cowgirl with her country music when she was still rocking her curly blonde hair with an acoustic guitar and cowgirl boots. Her high-school themed music album was full of feelings and emotions of a sweet and likeable girl who navigated through crushes and heartbreak.
Fearless – 2008
After a tour with big names in the country music scene, in 2008 Taylor released her album ‘Fearless’ which had a similar theme of love and heartbreak and was an instant hit. Fearless earned Taylor her first four grammy awards. In 2009, she became the first country artist to win a VMA. At just the age of 19, Taylor had already made herself the name and fame.
Speak Now – 2010
A young Taylor Swift, faced with criticism and doubts about her music wrote this album entirely on her own when people refused to believe talent at such a young age. The album was heavily successful when it debuted at #1 on Billboard 200 and sold over one million copies within its first week. This album is considered to be her transitory phase from country to pop music.
Red – 2012
The transition of Taylor’s curls to straight hair with bangs accompanied her new album ‘Red’ which was an iconic part of pop music era. This era was a huge part in Taylor’s music career when she released songs like “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” and the media scrutiny around her love life started and the image of Taylor as a singer about ‘heartbreaks and boys’ stuck around.
1989 – 2015
Taylor’s fifth studio album was her first album to be released entirely in the pop genre. It was inspired by 80’s pop and was massively successful. Taylor won Album of The Year at the 2016 Grammy Awards making her the first woman to win this award twice and the only artist to win the award for a country and a pop album. With this album’s success came Taylor’s reputation of the popular girl with the girl gang when she befriended popular Victoria Secret models like GiGi Hadid, Karlie Kloss and other big names who would then become ‘The Squad’.
Reputation – 2017
After a series of feuds with Kanye and Kim Kardashian, Taylor was painted as the ‘snake’ or a ‘venomous person’ until she disappeared for a while after 1989 and came back into the spotlight when she released ‘Reputation’ with a completely new persona and featured snakes on her aesthetic. This album switched up Taylor’s popular sweet girl image for the mean girl who is disliked by everyone. Taylor curated this image herself when she meant to reinvent her public image with this album. Like all her previous albums, Taylor saw massive success with this too when her stadium tour was sold-out and became the highest-grossing concert tour in the United States and North American history.
The song ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ featured her famous line “I’m sorry the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now, why? Oh, cause she’s dead” which was a way for Taylor to start her new reputation where she reduced being seen in public, doing interviews and started her first private relationship where she spent most of her time in London.
Lover – 2019
In an attempt to move away from the ‘bad girl’ image, Taylor opened this album with a visual of a snake bursting out into butterflies to indicate that she had given up her past to embrace a softer and warm version of herself. Unlike other albums, ‘Lover’ featured a lot of songs about love and theme of heartbreak was completely avoided. This era was short lived due to the pandemic when her album tour had to be cancelled. In 2019, she was named American Music Awards’ Artist of The Decade and Billboard’s Woman Of The Decade.
Folklore and Evermore – 2020
In the year 2020, Taylor released two sister albums ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ which had a similar theme of cottage-core and indie-folk which was a revisit to Taylor’s country roots. She switched up her style back to the blonde curls with soft makeup. Both albums debuted at #1. With a very vintage-vibe attached to it, folklore earned five nominations at the 2021 Grammy Awards.
After the release of these albums in 2020, Taylor has been re-recording her old music and trying to gain the rights to her art after in 2019 when Scooter Braun purchased Big Machine Records, the record label Taylor Swift had signed her first five albums with. This purchase gave Scooter the rights to all of Taylor’s old albums and created a chaos among the swifties. 2021 has been a beautiful and welcoming year for Taylor as she’s re-recording and re-releasing her classics.
